Historic landscapes are places to interpret through tours, signs, brochures and other media and thereby enrich the visitor's experience.
Sensitive use of interpretative elements brings visitors richer meaning to the cultural landscape preservation and visitor education. Heritage Landscapes, either on our own or collaborating with talented colleagues, has had opportunities in several projects to develop concepts, design, and oversee the fabrication of educational and interpretive elements for historic landscapes. For the Schenley Park Visitor Center we developed a full set of interior and exterior signs highlighting the cultural and natural history, geology and ecology of the park. For the four Pittsburgh Parks we collaborated on wayfinding maps for park visitor and emergency use. For the Druid Hill Park Palmhouse we designed the vertical stanchions and aided in the conceptual development and review of five highly informative signs for each greenhouse environment. For Eagle's Nest in Centerport, NY and Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, NY we developed high-quality graphics and text and printed self-guided tour brochures. Determining how to incorporate appropriate signage and interpretive programs into historic landscapes is an important aspect of our work that brings educational opportunities and, thereby increased visitor value to cultural landscapes. |
