Longue Vue House & Gardens, Katrina Recovery Canopy Renewal Plan
New Orleans, Louisiana

Heritage Landscapes and the Garden Conservancy worked on a comprehensive renewal of the trees and shrubs at Longue Vue House & Gardens, which sustained significant damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  The storm and subsequent flooding resulted in tree canopy loss that changed the character and feeling of the garden areas.  Heritage Landscapes previous research and planning report in 1997 enabled the team to quickly and efficiently assess the damaged landscape.  The intent of the project is to guide tree canopy renewal toward the Shipman/Stern/Platt documented landscape character.  Recommendations for canopy renewal focus on enhancing landscape character while shaping a sustainable landscape with attention to budget and staffing.

The Wild Garden sustained significant vegetation loss from flooding, yielding an open sunny landscape.  Historically the Wild Garden had dappled shade sheltering a Louisiana plant palette.  Rehabilitated in 1998, vegetation loss from Hurricane Katrina has resulted in a dramatically different character.

The proposed planting plan for the Wild Garden aims to recapture tree canopy with both historic trees and fast growing pines to provide shade for understory shrubs and groundcovers.
6
Over time the Spanish Court lost much of its understory flowering trees and the loss of oaks and magnolias from Katrina provides an opportunity to recapture Shipman plant composition at the court edges.

Our tree canopy renewal plan shows color coded vegetation at the Spanish Court edges.  Green indicates replace lost historic, red is remove, blue is remove/replace in-kind, and yellow is prune/maintain.
