Community preservation planning and implementation projects provide Heritage Landscapes with opportunities to integrate historic landscape character and values into the preservation of unique, everyday places of a town, village or city.
For example, in 1990 Heritage Landscapes carried out a study of the Great Lawn, nine acres of open space on Hartford Road
in Manchester, CT
that provide a setting for the historic homes of the Cheney family whose silk mills, worker housing, mansions and town landscapes shaped the South Manchester National Historic Landmark District. This modest, focused project identified shortcomings of the current zoning controls and recommended remedies. Our recent Mount Zion Historic Neighborhood Cultural Landscape Report for Somers, NY identifies both public and private aspects of the cultural landscape that has evolved in this community. The report, and our consultation on current development proposals are aiding the Somers Planning Commission in its decision-making process. |
