Historic landscapes of defense and the memorial landscapes of internment are repositories of our collective memory.
The preservation of battlefields and cemeteries often combines aspects of preserving landscape character, accommodating current use and overcoming abuse, while addressing vegetation management and limited financial and staffing resources. Heritage Landscapes has successfully addressed these issues in several projects. We have been privileged to plan for the successful community project to preserve, provide access to and celebrate the Conanicut Battery, a Revolutionary War earthwork overlooking the Naragansett Bay, Jamestown, Rhode Island. At Fort Phoenix, Fairhaven, MA, our history and construction documents were used to construct ADA access and mange vegetation. At West Point recommendations addressed the stabilization of Redoubts overlooking the Hudson River. In 2004, we provided historic landscape expertise for the proposed Museum of the American Revolution at Valley Forge. Our 1991 preservation plan for Lancaster and Woodward Hill Cemeteries served as a basis for recent National Register designation of these adjacent historic cemeteries at Lancaster PA. Efforts at The Evergreens Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY have integrated the new Mausoleum into the surrounding historic landscapes. Invasive vegetation at historic Prospect Cemetery, Jamaica, NY, has been replaced with turf. |
